Title: Life in technicolor
Fernando Sucre never managed to tell the brothers what he had seen. He tried to imagine a way to bring it up, when he would be alone with one of them, but he couldn't really imagine saying something like "I've seen you and Michael kissing, wanna tell me what that's about?" to Lincoln, who would probably just glare at him and say that he is crazy or wrong or that it's none of his business, with which he would be right.
Michael's reaction would probably be pretty similar or maybe he would admit it if Sucre would ask him at the wrong moment or situation and say that he is in love with Burrows and Sucre really didn't want to deal with that information, so he never said anything and didn't walk in on them again.
Since everything is over (they got Scylla and brought down the Company, literally a couple hours ago), they are finally free – Sucre is finally free and he is so ready to go back to his girls and be the best father and husband, ever.
So he is on his way to the computer to book a flight or a ticket for a bus. And he has to talk to the brothers, too, because...
... they are doing it again. Not kissing, (and that's still not what he wants to talk to them about) but being so very close to each other, checking messages, that it really doesn't matter anymore that they aren't kissing. They are that obvious.
Fernando stops as soon as he notice them, but it's too late. Of course they have noticed him already.
"Hey man, what..." Lincoln starts to say, getting up and Michael looks at him, intensely. He does that a lot, Sucre noticed, and it isn't helping...
"I've seen you kissing!" he blurts out, without wanting to.
"What?" Lincoln asks, exchanging looks with Michael. "What are you talking about?"
"You. Him. Kiss." One syllable Sucre is back as he motions nervously with his hands from one brother to the other. "A while ago, in one of the backrooms. But maybe I was wrong. It might have been the light, I don't know..."
Michael takes a deep breath, then exhales slowly. "Did you tell anyone?" He and Lincoln look tense as they wait for Sucre's answer.
"No way, bro! Noone knows!" Fernando reassures. "And I don't care either. Everything's cool." He hopes he looks like he means it. "Forget I ever mentioned it..."
The brothers exchange another look.
"I think it's better to give him the whole picture..." Michael rubs his face with his palm. "Could you please try to calm down a little?"
"I... I'm calm..." Sucre says, but his whole body language is telling them otherwise: he's stuttering, digging his hands into the pockets of his jeans and looks generally quite uncomfortable. "And I'm really okay with the part of the picture that I already have..." Because really, the last thing he wants are more images in his head to deal with.
"What you assume isn't entirely right, Fernando..." Michael begins cautiously and Lincoln says, "I'm adopted" all of a sudden, and all Sucre can do now is stare at him, at them both, because he had never seen that coming.
"What?" Fernando asks after a moment which feels like several hours to him. "Is that true?" he asks Michael now, who nods. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know at that time" Michael answers. "Besides, it really wasn't the right topic to talk about in prison. And it didn't matter for the escape... Our father mentioned it when he saved Linc from the Company on his way to see LJ. He thought, our mother had told us about it, but she didn't. And Lincoln didn't tell me until we got to Panama..."
"So why didn't *you* tell me?" Sucre wants to know from Lincoln now. "Sometime when we tried to get him out of Sona?" There had been plenty of opportunities where Lincoln could have told him - where he *should* have told him.
"My kid had been kidnapped, Michael was in prison and running out of time and that crazy Company bitch was watching my every step!" Lincoln reminds him. "I had other priorities than telling you, Sucre!"
"Which doesn't change the fact that you are brothers," Fernando says, because that's what adoption is about, after all.
"Well, it doesn't, but on the other hand we don't have the same biological parents anymore and that's enough..." Michael gets up as well and walks towards him, while Lincoln stays near the computer, watching them. Watching Sucre. "I know it must sound bad for you, Fernando, but sometimes things like that happen..."
Yeah, things like that happen. To other people. To people Fernando Sucre doesn't know or even consider as family... At least they're not going to go to hell for that...
"I know, bro..." He nods and they hug quickly. "Abruzzi was right for not buying your story, I guess" Fernando tries a grin on his way to the computer where he shakes hands with Lincoln. "I hope you ain't having any plans for the next few days..."
"Fernando!" Maricruz throws her arms around her boyfriend's neck. "Finally!"
Michael and Lincoln take a few steps back and try not to listen to the kisses and words whispered partly in Spanish and English, because that's Fernando and Maricruz' moment. Instead they look at each other, grinning a little, because what Sucre and his girl are doing, that's theirs now, too. They just have to get used to that, like to their freedom.
When the couple parts, Maricruz looks at them, beaming.
"You must be Michael." She hugs him tight, before he can say anything, and Lincoln grins, because Michael is obviously a little overwhelmed by it. "Thank you for getting my Fernando out of 'Fox River'. I would have married Hector and end up unhappy for the rest of my life."
He almost says that he had no other choice, because Sucre was his cellmate, but instead he hugs her back, saying, "I wouldn't want you or Fernando to be unhappy. You're welcome." She lets go of him.
"But there wouldn't be any escape without you at all" Now she hugs Lincoln, as well. "So thank you, too, Lincoln!"
"Thank the Company for that" he grins, hugging her back. "but you're welcome"
"That's why I wanted to finally meet you" Maricruz tells them, trying unsuccessfully to fight back the tears, while Fernando is talking to his baby in his arms in Spanish, completely focused only on the little girl, who chortles happily. "To thank you. Because without you our daughter wouldn't be able to see him for at least one more year..."
"Look at my daughter! She recognizes me! She remembers her daddy!" Sucre announces proudly, turning to his girlfriend and his friends.
"Of course she does!" Maricruz wipes tears from her face with her fingers. "You're her dad. She won't forget you and you won't forget her, ever."
"I knew you wouldn't let her forget me, mami." He kisses her, then stops. "I'll let you hold her, if you promise not to drop her..." He smirks, coming closer.
"I know how to hold a baby, I have a nephew," Michael reminds him, stretching his arms out and takes the baby. She doesn't even whine; instead she looks at Michael with calm, yet curious brown eyes. "This little girl is completely safe with me, isn't she?" he addresses that last sentence more to the baby than to her parents.
"Luckily for her she is as pretty as her mother" Lincoln jokes, stepping closer to Michael.
"Look at her nose!" Sucre laughs, and Maricruz kisses his nose. "That's my nose, ain't no doubts about it, I tell you, Linc! My nose, my kid!"
They all laugh and nod and agree on it.
They decide to take care of little Lilly for a while, so Maricruz and Fernando could take care of each other.
That's why Michael and Lincoln are half-sitting, half-lying on a blanket, in a nearby park, in case little Lilly doesn't like to be with them.
But the baby lies safely between them and giggles at her light-brown teddy that Michael is holding just out of her reach, so she has to lift her head a little and stretch out her arms and when she does, Michael lets the toy touch her belly or her nose.
He casts a glance at Lincoln from time to time, who was watching them, but now seems to be deep in his thoughts.
"Hey," Michael says softly, touching Lincoln's arm. "What is it?"
Lincoln shakes his head. Watching Michael play with Sucre's daughter brought back memories of a younger Michael and another baby with bright blue eyes and he misses his son so much it hurts.
"We have to tell LJ as soon as he comes back from Paris." Lincoln had insisted that LJ and Sofia had to be sent away somewhere safe as long as him and Michael were trying to get Scylla and Self had understood.
"Are you sure you want to do that?" Michael drops the toy on Lilly, who grabs it instantly and starts to put it into her little mouth.
"We would be hiding again and that wouldn't be living" Lincoln promised LJ no more secrets and it probably won't be the easiest thing they've ever done, but it's the right thing to do. "I'm not doing it if you're not okay with it, though..."
"I am." Michael changes his position slightly, so he can kiss Lincoln. "Believe me, I'm *very* okay with it, Linc..."
Lincoln doesn't let him withdraw, but puts his hand on Michael's neck; they kiss until Lilly starts whining a little, so Lincoln lifts her up. "Is it the diaper?" he asks her, pulling a face, until she stops whining while he smells at it. "No," he announces relieved. "Are you hungry, honey?"
"You think it's safe to go back home?" Michael wonders, because they've been in that park for over an hour now and the kid most likely misses her parents.
"They could be done with working on another little Sucre..." Lincoln grins, checking his watch. "Would you like that, sweetheart? A little brother or a little sister?"
Little Lilly doesn't look very happy about that thought, so Michael adds, getting up, "Being the older one must be great: the younger one adores you and does anything for you and gets you out of trouble, should you ever get in any..."
"Which you of course won't, because you'll take after your mommy and not after your daddy," Lincoln clears up, waiting for Michael to take the baby over, so he can get up. "Yeah, that part with the adoration isn't that bad, sometimes, until they suddenly sneak into your bed and steal your covers..." he admits.
"Don't listen to Uncle Linc, sweetheart, he loves that" Michael tells the girl loud enough for Lincoln to hear it, who grins and kisses him.
He would rather sleep without any covers forever than without Michael, and judging from the way Michael is looking at him, they both know it.
"We aren't real brothers, you know?" Michael says, handling the baby back to Lincoln and she looks at him as she would really understand what he says, while he folds the blanket and gather their things together. "I mean, we *are*, but we also have different parents... It's kinda complicated..."
"It really is," Lincoln agrees, putting her back into her buggy. "Maybe we should let that part out when you're older..."
"Yeah, that's probably for the better." Michael nods and smirks as they walk back to the Sucre's apartment. "Sucre will be very relieved to hear that..."
And Lincoln laughs.
