Title: Fixing what's wrong
He always wanted Lincoln and Fernando to be friends, and he was really glad to see the two people he trusts the most working together to get him out of Sona. Now he was free again and back in the States since a few days ago they decided to go out and celebrate – just him, Lincoln and Sucre.
Michael thought it would be a good idea, but now he isn't that sure anymore. He's standing at the bar waiting for their beers and watches them.
They sit at a table within his range of vision and are obviously having fun and are obviously not missing him at all. Lincoln is even laughing about something Fernando says!
Michael tries to remember when he had last heard Lincoln laughing. He is quite sure it must have been on their way to Utah which was months ago!
He should be happy to hear his brother laugh again, because that means that Lincoln is alive and okay, but he can't right now.
All he can do is notice that Fernando is now sitting on Michael's bar stool by Lincoln's side (way too close, by the way, thank you very much) and Lincoln completely doesn't mind! And now Michael thinks that maybe there was more behind Fernando's questions about Lincoln in 'Fox River' than he thought. He grabs the bottles the barkeeper passes him and goes back to them.
"I think we should go home..." he says before he can stop himself.
"We've been here an hour or so and you want to go already?" Sucre asks.
"Pass me a beer and sit down, Michael," Lincoln says and Michael wants to do exactly the opposite for a moment; on the other hand he doesn't want to leave them alone, so he sits down and takes a sip of his beer.
That's when Sucre's cell phone rings. He takes a sip from his beer and picks up. "Are you okay, Baby?" He listens for a moment. "Wait a second, it's pretty loud in here..." And giving the brothers an apologetic look, Fernando turns to look for a more quiet place.
"Why d'you want to leave?" Lincoln wants to know, swapping bar stools with the absent Sucre and Michael shrugs, just looking at him.
"Because three is a crowd," he wants to say, but doesn't; he takes a long sip from his bottle instead.
"I totally get why Sucre's your best friend." Linc says all of a sudden and it's exactly the one thing Michael doesn't want to hear. "I always thought he was just a big mouth, but he isn't. He's cool."
"He has a pregnant girlfriend waiting for him at home," Michael says angrily. "In case you forget."
"It's kinda hard to forget, since he's talking about her all the time." Lincoln gives him a weird look. "What the hell is wrong with you, Michael? You've been acting weird all evening..."
Michael just snorts, glancing in the direction Sucre went to. "You've been acting weird since we got back..."
Since they were back, Lincoln became the perfect big brother. Touches were rare and strictly brotherly and Michael hated it, because they had crossed that line after 'Fox River' and there was no going back.
"I'd never thought you'd pretend nothing had changed..." he admits, and Lincoln looks as if Michael had hit him.
"I'm just trying to respect your wishes, Michael!" Lincoln sounds hurt, but Michael tries not to notice, not to care. "You made perfectly clear who you want to be with, then in Sona. And you can't be with me just because she is dead, it's not working like that..."
Suddenly Michael feels cold and his hands start to tremble. What he'd said back in Sona...
"Oh God, no! Lincoln, that was..." He remembers now, he knows what Lincoln is referring to, but it's just a misunderstanding and he has to clear it immediately. "She had nothing to do with any of what happened and killing her was just wrong, but it doesn't mean that I... I wasn't in love with her, Lincoln..." Michael looks pleadingly at his older brother. "She was just another innocent victim in this whole suspicion, but I never wanted to spend my life with her... I admit, I was overreacting a lot... And I'm really sorry, Linc..."
"Maricruz ordered me not to come home without ice-cream." Sucre shows up before Lincoln can say anything. "The girl wants ice-cream in the middle of the night! Is that normal? Linc?" He sits down on that unoccupied bar stool next to Michael and looks questioningly at Lincoln, drinking.
"Yeah... Lisa had the most weird food preferences ever during pregnancy," Lincoln confirms as he looks away from Michael, reluctantly. "No matter what time of day it was - or night. It's like a test or something. Whatever your girl wants, it's better she gets it from you. Especially if you'd missed most of her pregnancy..."
"You're probably right, bro..." Sucre sighs and empties his bottle of beer. "I guess I'll call it a night, then... but let's repeat that another time..." He shakes hands with both of them and leaves.
"D'you wanna stay?" Lincoln asks then and Michael shakes his head. All he wants is to be somewhere without people, where he can try to fix things between Lincoln and him, so they finish their beers quickly and leave as well.
Michael considers asking Lincoln to say anything to what he'd said earlier, as they walk to their apartment in that warm summer night, when his brother finally speaks: "Were you serious? About what you said in the bar? About her?"
"Yes," Michael answers without hesitation. "I know I've said terrible things when I was in Sona and... please believe me that I didn't mean it..." He steps closer to Lincoln so their hands brush slightly as they walk. "I miss you..."
Michael swallows the tears he feels building up in his eyes as he carefully takes Lincoln's hand in his own. His brother doesn't stop him, doesn't reject him and Michael has to breath slowly now, because his heart is beating so fast.
"I just want you back and I swear to you, I will... I will..“ he begins but can't continue, because Lincoln's other hand touches his cheek now, so Michael leans in, just a tiny little bit, and then Lincoln leans in and closes the last distance between them with his lips. They both sigh with relief in the soft kiss, holding each other close and not caring that they're standing in the middle of the sidewalk.
"I miss you, too..." Lincoln says, before kissing him again and Michael parts his lips a little, shivering with pleasure, when Lincoln's tongue touches his slowly. Michael wraps his arms tighter around Lincoln, to feel him as close as possible, when he deepens the kiss a little more...
