Title: Summertimes
She was nine, maybe ten years old and visiting her grandma, who lived just a few streets away from his place during summer vacations
"Hi, I'm Audrey," she said, as he passed her grandma's garden on his way home from the library.
He was almost ten and really terrified of strangers; he was afraid they could see what happens to him, smell it somehow, sense it and laugh about him or think he was bad. But he liked her dark hair and green eyes, and the way she smiled at him.
"I know. I've noticed you before," he said, stopping. "I'm Theodore."
"Are you really reading that book?" she asked, pointing at the encyclopedia he was clutching to his chest and he nodded. "You must be pretty smart, then,“ Audrey added.
"I just like words." he smiled a little. Although his father wanted him to learn them, they quickly became comforting, giving him the opportunity to flee in another world, where nothing and noone could hurt him.
"I have to go now, but we can talk tomorrow again, if you want, Theodore," she said suddenly, and when he said he'd like to, she nodded, waved at him and ran back to the house.
For the rest of the day he remembered the way she had said his name and smiled to himself every time he thought about seeing her again. Luckily his dad didn't notice his good mood and didn't come to his room that night.
He saw Audrey the next day in the park, and the following week a few times and they talked about books and school and she told him that she wanted to be a dancer when she grew up. She called him 'Teddy' after a few days and asked him what he wanted to be.
He wanted to say 'superhero' so he'd make his father stop doing THAT to him and just fly away from everything, but he said 'pilot' instead, because superheroes are not real.
On one sunny afternoon, they sat on the grass in the tiny park and he recited to her what the encyclopedia said about dancing. She watched him, impressed and even held his hand on their way back, which made him stutter a little, but he liked it. Very much.
"Audrey! Come inside!" her grandmother demanded angrily from the front door, when she saw them standing by the garden, giggling, not wanting to say goodbye yet.
"I'd better go" Audrey said. "See you, Teddy!"
"Stay away from that Bagwell boy!" he could hear the old woman say. "He is not a good company for you!“
He never talked to her again. Not that summer, not the summer that followed.
And yet, now, 30 years later he doesn't think of her, of course, but he dreams of her sometimes, in hot summer nights. Of her and her dark hair and green eyes and that smile that made him feel like a normal child for a while...
