Title: Five lies - That's the truth
"It's over, with Sara“, stated Michael going on deck of the 'Christina Rose'.
Lincoln lived alone on the boat now. Michael had lived in Sara's hotel room during the last weeks - not far away from Lincoln, though.
"Oh“, Lincoln said. "I'm sorry, little bro“ He was not looking at Michael. "Do you want a beer?“
Michael shrugged and followed Lincoln under the deck.
"What happened?“ asked his older brother.
"She said that she want someone for whom she is the most important person.“ Michael repeated the doctor's words. "And that I'd stayed with her out of gratefulness and guilt. That wouldn't be a base for a relationship."
"You went to prison instead of her!“ Lincoln passed him a bottle of beer. "If that doesn't prove your feelings for her, then I don't know what does...“
Michael stayed silent, thinking about his brother's words. He had done everything he could to avoid giving her any reasons to doubt his feelings for her, so he didn't need to think about his own doubts. He didn't like the fact that Lincoln thought like that, even when he couldn't say why...
"You don't love me; you love Lincoln.“ she'd said, but Michael kept that to himself.
"You never seemed to get along,“ he said instead and took a sip from the bottle, "and you never told me, why...“
„She went through a lot because of us and helped us... I'm thankful...“ Lincoln finally looked at him. "But we never had that much in common...“ He cleared his throat. „Maybe she just needs some time for herself and will come back...“
Each time when Lincoln said things like that, sentences that were normal for older brother's, Michael's stomach clenched a little. Lincoln and him were a lot of things, but they were never ordinary brother's, because...
"Of course I love him: he's my brother!“ He felt his heart beating faster and his palms getting sweaty. She shouldn't have noticed...
"You are in love with Lincoln“ She looked at him calmly, yet desperated. "And he is in love with you. Do you think I don't notice the way he looks at you? Or that you are somewhere else with your thoughts everytime you've seen him?“
"No!“ it surprised both of them, how easily this little word slipped from his lips. "I can't fall in love with him: he is my brother!“
That was easier, but he had told that to himself over and over again for years and tried hard to believe it, it became more difficult each year, though. „That's the truth“ he added, but Sara shook her head, sighing and looking at her watch.
"Come with me, Michael. Let's go back to Chicago or wherever you want and start a new life. Just you and me...“
"I can't...“ he whispered. Not without Lincoln. But he didn't have to say it out loud, she knew already...
A car was honking outside.
"That's my cab. Goodbye, Michael...“ She kissed him briefly and shouldered her already packed backpack.
"She said I'm in love with someone else...“ Michael said, before he could stop himself and looked at Lincoln; he shouldn't has done either, because Lincoln didn't look away - he didn't look at him like a brother, too.
"... And he is in love with you...“ He recalled Sara's words and smiled a little.
Maybe everything would really turn out good now. No one in Panama knew they were brother's, after all...
